Postage stamp enthusiast collector, investor, hobbyist or philatelist
Philately and stamp collecting is not necessarily synonymous. Philately is technically the study of stamps, postal history, technical aspects of stamps and stamp identification. This could encompass studying the
paper and gum materials, the design and printing process, stamp perforation, watermarks, postmarks
and associated authorities, airmail, post cards, pre-stamped stationary etc. The list is almost endless. Stamp collectors (and investors), however, have an interest in collecting postage stamps and related
items. Consequently, a philatelist who is interested in the study of stamps may or may not be a stamp collector. We have included the investor or collector of stamps and the like under the heading of philately
as encompassing a common and general concept as an interest in the little piece of paper known as the ‘postage stamp’.
